Alien: Covenant (2017)

£0.00

Country: US/GB
Technical: col/2.39:1 122m
Director: Ridley Scott
Cast: Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride

Synopsis:

Ten years after the events of Prometheus, a coloniser ship diverts from its course in response to a communication from a nearby uncharted planet, believing it to be more habitable than their scheduled destination. There they encounter an evolved version of the android David's Xenomorph, and David himself, who envisions himself as its Creator.

Review:

Scott milks the franchise further with this clinker, which continues to undermine its sequels while recycling their signature elements. Thus the creature, though less 'evolved' than it would be by the time of the events of Alien (1979), cell-divides at an infinitely faster rate and can explode out of whatever orifice it chooses. The main narrative is the classic Xenophon's Expedition fabula to be found in everything from The Warriors to King Kong: Skull Island (and the first two Alien films), with the one point of interest that it sacrifices its most sympathetic character early on. Shelley, Wagner, and ideas of creativity versus implacable logic struggle to gain much traction amid the generic 'weak humanity versus strong evil' survival stakes. A third entry in the planned prequel trilogy has not (yet) materialised.
