Alice in Wonderland (2010)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/1.44:1 108m
Director: Tim Burton
Cast: Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway

Synopsis:

On the cusp of adulthood, Alice forestalls the most momentous decision of her young life - whether to marry the young Lord both families intend for her - by returning to the fantasy world of her youth and facing her demons.

Review:

An adolescent Alice brings out the sexual subtext in a way we recognise from the director of Sleepy Hollow et al., and he sensibly has a go at both Alice books, leading to a Joan of Arc-like Jabberwocky showdown. The producers conjure the fantastically colourful world of Bandersnatch, Mad Hatter, sister queens, etc., part studio, part CGI, part animatronic, so as to create the most magical illusions, the most remarkable being the various shrinkings and resizings of the heroine. The recipient of a luke-warm response on its release, this is a classically proportioned, rather perfectly satisfying piece of work.
