Ali (2001)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: DeLuxe/scope 159m
Director: Michael Mann
Cast: Will Smith, Jon Voight, Jamie Foxx, Mario Van Peebles, Ron Silver, Jeffrey Wright, Giancarlo Esposito, Nona Gaye

Synopsis:

The career and loves of boxer Cassius Clay, from his adoption of the name Muhammad Ali, through his ups and downs with Malcolm X and black militancy, Islam and the Vietnam draft, and culminating in his regaining of the World Heavyweight title in Kinshasa.

Review:

Far more sober than an Oliver Stone biopic, Mann's film is leisurely, multi-angled, though always anchored around Smith's compelling impersonation, and irritatingly inaudible very often. The boxing bouts are exhaustively recreated, with few of the elisions and impressionistic effects of boxing on film, and there are some fine scenes and excellent support. The succession of romantic entanglements adds less than the various political backdrops; it is clear that Ali was a force to be reckoned with not just inside the ring, one who used his celebrity wisely, if not his libido.
