Age of Innocence (1977)

(Ragtime Summer)

Country: GB/CAN
Technical: col 101m
Director: Alan Bridges
Cast: David Warner, Honor Blackman, Trudy Young

Synopsis:

A preparatory school outside Winnipeg in the 1920s is delighted with the cultured science teacher from England, until it comes to light that he has been imprisoned for being a conscientious objector. The womenfolk, however, harbour no such prejudice, and male intemperance leads to tragedy.

Review:

Familiar 'Bridgian' themes suffuse this gentle period film of simmering eroticism, and the character of the young boy recalls that of Dominic Guard in The Go-Between. Indeed some of the technical primitivism of that film plagues this one to its detriment: stilted dialogue, indifferent acting (except for Warner, always impressive), clunky editing, inapt music track, the list goes on. And yet, there is something touching about it that comes through nonetheless.
