Age of Uprising: The Legend of Michael Kohlhaas (2013)

(Michael Kohlhaas)

Country: FR/GER
Technical: col/2.35:1 122m
Director: Arnaud de Pallières
Cast: Mads Mikkelsen, Mélusine Mayance, Bruno Ganz, Denis Lavant

Synopsis:

A prosperous horse dealer in the sixteenth century Cévennes region seeks reparation for mistreatment of his animals and servant by the local baron. When insult is heaped upon injury, he raises a private army and wages war on the miscreant.

Review:

What could easily have become a europudding Robin Hood, with all the predictable scenes of rapine and revenge, is in fact much more Bressonian than that. Certain events are elided so much that the viewer is left to fill in the gaps for himself, the pace is slow and dialogue laconic in the extreme. While this is doubtless far more reflective of the time, the effect is so unvarying as to militate ultimately against itself. However, the sense of an outsider demanding justice according to his own principles is nicely caught, and in the end there is a moving solemnity about its measured apportionment.
