Afterlife (1998)

Country: JAP
Technical: col 118m
Director: Hirokazu Koreeda
Cast: Arata, Erika Oda, Susumu Terajima

Synopsis:

Individuals arriving at a bureaucratic way station after death are asked to select one memory from their lives with which to spend eternity; at the end of the week the staff will attempt to recreate and film their event so that they can take it with them.

Review:

Possibly one of the slowest films ever made, this alluring concept is given a lo-tech treatment reminiscent of Tarkovsky's S-F films and concentrates on the characters, some of whom need help choosing, and others of whom rebel against the requirement to choose. There are awkward logistical problems that go unanswered: how one man can review his entire life on videotape in the course of forty-eight hours, even if it were possible to have filmed it; and if so, what need is there to recreate the memories? Moreover, how can these hastily improvised reconstructions possibly match the real thing?
