Ae Fond Kiss... (2004)

£0.00

Country: GB/GER/IT/SP/FR
Technical: DeLuxe 104m
Director: Ken Loach
Cast: Atta Yaqub, Eva Birthistle, Gary Lewis

Synopsis:

A Glaswegian Pakistani dates an Irish catholic schoolteacher even though he is promised in marriage to a cousin. They each discover to what extent their communities have pressure to bear in thwarting this blossoming love affair.

Review:

Beginning as a jolly enough cross-cultural romance, the film gradually gains in seriousness as we see first the lad's dilemma in the face of the destruction of his family's sense of honour, then the girl's predicament as she fails to retain her post in a catholic school because she is living in sin. Nevertheless, the girl never quite sees things from the Asian point of view, which strains both credibility and sympathy, and the male lead is conversely not as strong as she is on the screen. There is one sequence in the best Loach tradition as we see the family's world crumbling around the old patriarch and his native speaking wife.
