The 51st State (2001)

£0.00

Country: GB/CAN
Technical: col/2.35:1 93m
Director: Ronny Yu
Cast: Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Carlyle, Emily Mortimer, Rhys Ifans, Sean Pertwee, Meatloaf, Ricky Tomlinson

Synopsis:

A pharmacologist cuts loose from thirty years working for drug dealers and journeys to Liverpool to make a deal with a mobster for his wonder drug, a concoction made entirely from over-the-counter narcotics. However, a hit woman is on his tail and the local police is corrupt.

Review:

Fish-out-of-water drug crime thriller which owes as much to British crime cinema as it does to Tarantino and his imitators. Violent, profane and amoral, it treats lab mice with more respect than human beings, but affords a talented cast the opportunity to emote at the tops of their voices. So, if you are hardened to this sort of thing, it does at least have pace, style and verve on its side; plus, the fun of seeing Jackson get to grips with Brit culture.
