9 Songs (2004)

Country: GB
Technical: col 71m
Director: Michael Winterbottom
Cast: Kieran O'Brien, Margo Stilley

Synopsis:

Visiting Antarctica as part of his work, a glaciologist looks back over his affair with a young American girl in London, associated in his mind with the nine concerts they attended together.

Review:

A censorship milestone on a number of scores (pardon the pun), with oral sex, penetration and ejaculation shown explicitly for the first time under an 18 certificate in the UK. A far tamer version was released in the US, emasculating what is already a mind-numbingly tedious watch. Controversial scenes of authentic sex are succeeded by banal sequences of the lovers eating, bathing, or walking on the beach, or by interminable live concert footage of the bands (or, in one case, Michael Nyman) referred to in the title. 'The ice sheets are the Earth's memory,' ruminates the film's hero, 'of a time before there were people.' Cut to a shot of his tongue caressing her nipple, and that is about as profound as this one gets.
