8MM (1999)

£0.00

Country: US/GER
Technical: Technicolor/Super 35 123m
Director: Joel Schumacher
Cast: Nicolas Cage, Joaquin Phoenix, Catherine Keener, James Gandolfini, Peter Stormare, Anthony Heald,

Synopsis:

A surveillance operative is hired by a widowed millionairess to investigate a possible snuff movie found among her late husband's effects, and finds himself enveloped by the seamy world of pornography in Los Angeles and New York.

Review:

Operating along similar lines to the Spanish Tesis, what might have been a rare mainstream dip into disturbing waters succeeds only in muddying them somewhat. The tone of the film oscillates between naïve censoriousness (Cage turning from desensitized viewer to brutal killer) and heavy-handed sensationalism (much of the dialogue), culminating in incredible scenes where the hero confronts his bogey man and keeps his wife in the dark about everything. As he is reputed to be in the story, the movie is good-looking but completely inept.
