(78/52: Hitchcock's Shower Scene)

Country: US
Technical: bw/col 91m
Director: Alexandre O. Philippe
Cast: Marli Renfro, Alfred Hitchcock, Tere Carrubba, Peter Bogdanovich (as themselves)

Synopsis:

Film makers, actors and academics pore over every frame of the Psycho shower scene, which comprised 52 setups and 78 cuts.

Review:

Set within an exquisitely recreated black and white mise en scène of the Bates motel, Philippe's film almost certainly answers any question you ever wanted to ask about the shooting of the infamous scene, which the contributors no doubt rightly identify as a pivotal moment in American (film) culture. Thus quite apart from the boundary-pushing mechanics of the scene itself and its narrative significance, we find examined its roots within Fifties 'momma' culture, and especially Hitchcock's own body of work, its presaging of a decade of violent upheaval, and its many imitations and quotations. There is even a curtain-popping moment cited from a 1930s musical! In spite of some pseudish commentary and the exhaustive length, it is never boring.
