Country: ROM/NL/FR/GER
Technical: col/scope 113m
Director: Cristian Mungiu
Cast: Anamaria Marinca, Laura Vasiliu, Vlad Ivanov

Synopsis:

Romania before the fall of Ceaucescu: a student helps her roommate in her need to obtain an abortion, involving booking a hotel room under false pretences, acting as a bargaining chip in the bungled business transaction with the aborter, and being dishonest with her own lover and his family at whose home she must attend a birthday party.

Review:

Intense drama set over the course of a single day, recalling the Dardennes' Rosetta in its close shadowing of the lead character. Some of the takes are very long, with some bravura acting from its trio of actors particularly, in a sustained sequence in the hotel room prior to the termination. The moral question of whether to dispose of an unwanted foetus is all but ignored by the characters, in favour of the inconvenience of the situation and illegality of its resolution. However, the psychological toll on the characters and their relationships is left in no doubt by the film's wan conclusion.
