Technical: col/scope 129m
Director: Wong Kar-Wai
Cast: Tony Leung, Gong Li, Faye Wong, Zhang Ziyi, Carina Lau, Maggie Cheung, Takuya Kimura

Synopsis:

Hong Kong, the 1960s: a writer returned from Singapore following the débâcle of his life's love settles into a seedy hotel and embarks on an existence of casual romance, breaking the heart of a prostitute who shares his landing and meditating over his past affairs. Meanwhile he has written a novel about a city of the future to which one can journey in which nothing ever changes and hence memories can be savoured ad infinitum.

Review:

Shot in the same lush, dreamy style of In the Mood for Love, less choppy than other films by this director, this is also one of his most accessible films and something of a showcase for oriental acting talent. It distils that feeling of romantic anomie experienced by one who has missed his opportunity for love and vainly tries to seek amusement in casual encounters to distract himself from the fact that it cannot be recaptured. Much depends on one's liking for the lead and tolerance of the callous swathe he cuts through the female cast. As individual a work of cinema, however, as one could wish for.
