20,000 Days on Earth (2014)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col/2.35:1 97m
Director: Iain Forsyth, Jane Pollard
Cast: Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Ray Winstone, Kylie Minogue

Synopsis:

As he awakes in Brighton to celebrate his 20,000th day alive, alternative rock star Nick Cave reminisces with his head shrink, works on his new album with long-term collaborator Warren Ellis, and visits the Nick Cave archive. The footage, and other material shot in and around the city, is accompanied by the artist's musings on the importance of memory and the transformative power of performance.

Review:

Cave is undeniably an engaging and eloquent presence, stopping short of the portentous pronouncements of some ageing rock stars. He admits that he cannibalises his experience, hoping that the spirit will take wing and turn it into art, and concert footage makes clear that there is an audience for his allusive, dirge-like, circular anthems. This said, for Cave neophytes there is little more than the above and some slick film making to commend this fantasia-like documentary.
