The Valley of Decision (1945)

Country: US
Technical: bw 119m
Director: Tay Garnett
Cast: Greer Garson, Gregory Peck, Lionel Barrymore, Donald Crisp

Synopsis:

In 19th Century Pittsburgh, the scion of a family of steel mill owners catches the eye of the Irish girl who works in his house as a maid. Fate is not on their side, though, for he is engaged to another and the maid's family is involved in a mill workers' strike.

Review:

Standard MGM period drama of the kind in which deaths occur without warning and swiftly get forgotten in the saga-like march of time where ten years pass in the space of a cut. Enjoyable in a Catherine Cookson sort of way, especially in the relationship between the star and Gladys Cooper's character.
