The Queen's Gambit (2020)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/1.78:1 TV series: 420m
Director: Scott Frank, Allan Scott
Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Chloe Pirrie, Bill Camp, Marielle Heller

Synopsis:

Brought up in an orphanage on the suicide of her mother, young Beth Harmon learns to play chess with the janitor. Adoption comes as a mixed blessing but she learns to make her way in the world and pursue her dream of becoming world champion.

Review:

This Netflix series could have been the familiar tale of rags to riches but maintains its focus on the game itself, and the way in which its heroine uses her talents to her advantage is a constant joy. The production is astoundingly good, and the episodes carefully constructed; it also focused our attention on the young Anya, who had just made a rather quirky Emma Woodhouse.
