Quintet (1979)
Country: US
Technical: col 118m
Director: Robert Altman
Cast: Paul Newman, Vittorio Gassman, Brigitte Fossey, Fernando Rey, Bibi Andersson
Synopsis:
With humanity in the grip of an ice age, humans pass the time playing the eponymous board game. For one group of individuals the practice takes on a very real dimension, and their survival hangs by the outcome.
Review:
Possibly Altman's most pretentious film (though that is up for debate), this dystopian fantasy for intellectuals is strong on metaphysical talk but low on action. In a society of the aged or ageing, a pregnant character represents hope but is killed off by the game early on. Occasionally striking visuals are all there is to stop you glazing over.
