Minnelli's film is a decent Hollywood attempt at a biopic of an uncompromising artist. Needing to make few compromises for the censor, it succeeds in presenting its subject sensitively and with a visual palette that seems hewn from the same material as its subject's painting. Douglas invests himself fully, as one might expect.
