Judy (2019)
Country: GB/FR/US
Technical: col/2.35:1 118m
Director: Rupert Goold
Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jessie Buckley, Finn Wittrock, Rufus Sewell
Synopsis:
As her precarious personal circumstances lose her custody of her children, Judy Garland embarks on a series of sell-out concerts in London. But her fragile mental health and dependency on uppers and downers make her a volatile attraction.
Review:
Adapted from Peter Quilter's stage play, this sad little film follows a similar pattern to Stan & Ollie, focusing on a UK tour, with backstage travails, adoring fans and personal relationships to the fore, while studio era flashbacks are reserved for special relevance. It's a winning formula, avoiding the elisions and montages of so many biopics and allowing us to deepen our understanding of the principal. The star is overwhelming in her projection of vulnerability, her matching of the vocals to Garland's own timbre nothing short of arresting.
