Gentleman Jack (2019-22)

£0.00

Country: GB/US
Technical: col/16:9 TV series: 16 episodes (960m)
Director: Sally Wainwright, others
Cast: Suranne Jones, Sophie Rundle, Gemma Whelan, Timothy West, Gemma Jones, Joe Armstrong

Synopsis:

In nineteenth century Shibden, W. Yorks., the wealthy Miss Lister seeks to expand her revenues in all sorts of ways, starting with coal mining and ultimately allying her fortunes with those of the unmarried heiress, Ann Walker.

Review:

Wainwright's playfully anachronistic way of adapting Anne Lister's diaries comes up trumps in the first series, where the lesbian relationship at its centre hides in plain sight, as it were. In the second series, Anne becomes a less winsome figure, both in her politics and in her treatment of those near to her, and may consequently have lost some fans. The subplots are numerous and it all seems not to get anywhere very fast. A BBC/HBO collaboration.
